Scotland, the U.K.’s northernmost country, is a land of mountain wildernesses, lochs (lakes) and glens (valleys). For many hundreds of years, the inhabitants of Scotland have been building fortifications and strongholds of one kind or another. It wasn't long before magnificent castles sprung up, their glorious towers reaching for the heavens. Those who could afford this sort of protection for their families made sure that they had it and in some ways flaunt it too. There were at some point about 3,000 castles more or less in Scotland and around the country there are many ruins and abandoned town houses that suggest this could have been true. However, some of these buildings have been maintained and restored to how they looked back then... Here are some that I have had the pleasure to visit whilst living in Scotland.
